The
Ghana Education Service (GES) has reaffirmed that Senior High Schools (SHSs)
will reopen on January 3, 2025, despite calls from the Conference of Heads of
Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) to postpone the reopening due to unresolved
financial concerns.
In a press release, the GES stated that the 2024/25
academic calendar remains unchanged, with primary and Junior High Schools
reopening on January 8, 2025. The GES acknowledged the concerns raised by CHASS
and said they are actively engaging the Ministry of Education to address them.
CHASS had appealed to the government on December 31,
2024, to postpone the reopening date until outstanding debts for food and
operational expenses are cleared. CHASS claims the government has failed to
respond to three prior appeals dating back to August 2024 for the payment of
these arrears.
The CHASS National Secretary warned that regional
branches have been directed to notify parents of a potential delay, and any
member who defies the directive will face sanctions for undermining their
collective position.
