"We are quite worried. In terms of business, 9 million
SIMs is a sizable quantity of SIMs. To encourage individuals to register, we
keep working with our clients and stepping up our field efforts. Despite
several attempts to encourage individuals to visit and register, the major
cause for worry is the indifference and lack of engagement of consumers. Many
of our service centers and retailers were quite busy, with long lines. Why does
it take until the last few days for individuals to answer is the query.
But we're dedicated as a company. We are aware of and in
agreement with the national SIM re-registration initiative.
Selorm Adadevoh also outlined measures the company has put
in place for MoMo account holders who cannot meet the deadline.
“Your SIM will be delinked and deactivated, but as you have
money on your SIM, we do have a provision in the Payment System and Services
Act (PSSA), on how to treat funds that have not been accessed. Essentially,
they will be treated as dormant funds, and you can redeem them at any point in
time through the right processes and identification. All of these will be an advice
for customers at the end of the exercise,” he noted.
So now this is to ensure that those who have not fully registered their
SIM cards will be blocked and as we speak, the numbers of those that will be
blocked are about 9 million and then if you consider those on mobile money that
will be blocked, they are about 7.4 million, and they will not have access to
their mobile money. So on the GSM side, you will not be able to make a call,
you will not be able to receive a call, send a text, and also not be able to
use data services.”
